Vaccines and Preventive Care

Every pet should receive routine vaccinations every year, with variations depending on age, overall health, lifestyle, and geographic location. Vaccines work by stimulating an immune response to specific, potentially deadly bacteria or viruses, providing protection upon exposure. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, the increase in pet vaccinations has saved millions of animals from severe preventable diseases and even death over the last century. 

Legally Required Vaccinations

• Rabies - Rabies vaccines are required by law for dogs and cats in the state of Washington and need to be taken seriously. Your puppy or kitten will get the first injection at around 16 weeks, followed by boosters every 1 to 3 years. 

Recommended Dog Vaccinations 

Strongly Recommended: 

• DHPP - This vaccine protects your pet against distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, and canine parvovirus in just one dose. Your puppy will get the DHPP vaccine every two to four weeks until 16 weeks, then as a yearly booster. 

Lifestyle Based Recommendations: 

• Bordetella - Although it's not a mandatory or core vaccine, the bordetella vaccination helps prevent the spread of kennel cough. Most dog groomers, doggie daycares, and boarding facilities request proof of this yearly vaccine to allow your pet access to their premises. 

• Canine Influenza - This vaccine has multiple forms, like human flu vaccines. It is recommended for dogs that go to dog groomers, doggie daycares, boarding facilities, and dog parks.
• Leptospirosis - This vaccine is recommended for dogs that spend time hiking, camping, drinking out of puddles, or those living near large raccoon populations. 

Recommended Cat Vaccinations

Strongly Recommended: 

• FVRCP - This vaccine protects your feline friend against feline rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia. We recommend vaccinating your cat at eight weeks of age and every 3 to 4 weeks until 12 to 14 weeks, with boosters every year and then every three years. 

Lifestyle Based Recommendations: 

• FeLV (Feline Leukemia) - This vaccine is recommended for felines that spend time outdoors or cats who live with an indoor/outdoor cat. Cats who are exclusively indoors do not require the FeLV vaccine.
